CIBC Banking for International students
Current pathway: Student banking route rather than the PR/worker newcomer benefit.
Which CIBC program applies?
CIBC Smart for Students. CIBC directs international students to its student banking offer. A study permit is also an accepted status for the CIBC Smart Arrival pre-arrival process.
Documents to prepare
- Canadian study permit or applicable IRCC Letter of Introduction
- Government photo identification
- Proof of enrolment may be required for student benefits
Credit-card note
Student credit products have separate approval and eligibility rules.
Can you apply before arriving in Canada?
CIBC Smart Arrival lets eligible permanent residents, foreign workers and international students apply before arrival. CIBC currently requires arrival within the next 12 months, a valid passport, UCI and applicable Canadian immigration documents.

If you do not qualify for the special newcomer offer
FCAC states that a person may be able to open a bank account with proper identification even if they are not a Canadian citizen or live in another country. Special newcomer promotions have narrower bank-specific eligibility than the underlying right to seek a basic account.
This matters because a five-year newcomer window, minimum work-permit term or student-program rule can determine whether you receive a promotion without necessarily deciding whether an ordinary personal account can be opened.
