Coverage: Public Mobile has the simpler national story

Public Mobile says its service runs on a 5G network powered by TELUS and that its coverage reaches 99% of Canada. That makes it the easier starting point for people who travel frequently between provinces, live outside major metropolitan areas or simply do not want to think about a carrier's subscription zone.

Fizz is different. It separates the subscription area—where you must live to become a customer—from the broader coverage area where your plan can work. Fizz currently lists Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia as provinces where mobile subscription is available. Outside the native Fizz footprint, phones can use partner networks, but Fizz says that extended-network use is designed to be occasional and that most usage should occur within the subscription area.

Fizz wins on plan customization and rollover

Fizz lets customers configure several elements of a plan instead of choosing only from fixed bundles. The coverage area itself can be provincial, Canada, or Canada + United States, and the account can be adjusted for data, calling and other options.

The more unusual feature is rollover. Fizz states that unused data from the monthly plan is automatically carried forward rather than disappearing immediately at the end of the cycle. For someone whose usage swings from 8 GB one month to 25 GB the next, that flexibility can matter more than buying the largest data bucket every month.

Newcomers: Fizz publishes the clearer onboarding policy

Fizz has a dedicated newcomer page that explicitly says there is no credit check because the service is prepaid. It says an email address and accepted payment method are enough for the credit-history side of activation, and it advertises no activation fee.

Fizz also says its eSIM is free and can be ordered and activated the same day on compatible devices. That is useful for someone who has just arrived in Canada and wants service without waiting for a physical SIM.

Public Mobile also supports eSIM activation through its mobile app and markets activation in minutes. We would not choose between the two solely on eSIM; coverage and the ongoing plan structure are more important after the first day.

Public Mobile is stronger for travel inside Canada

If your usage regularly crosses provincial boundaries, Public Mobile's TELUS-powered national footprint is easier to evaluate. Public Mobile also advertises Canada–U.S.–Mexico plans for users who want a single roaming-inclusive structure.

Fizz can also be configured for Canada or Canada + U.S. coverage, but its native-versus-partner-network architecture adds another constraint: extended partner coverage should not become your dominant usage pattern for months at a time.

Do not compare headline data without comparing the rules

A 50 GB plan is not automatically better than a 30 GB plan. Compare:

• the monthly price you will actually pay after any temporary promotion;
• whether unused data survives into future months;
• coverage at home, work and on your actual travel routes;
• international or U.S. usage you genuinely need;
• activation/SIM costs;
• rewards or loyalty credits you realistically expect to use.

Which is better for a newcomer?

Fizz is especially compelling when you live in its subscription area because the company clearly designs its onboarding around prepaid service, no Canadian credit-history requirement and fast eSIM activation. Public Mobile becomes more compelling when nationwide coverage is the dominant concern or you expect to spend substantial time outside Fizz's native subscription footprint.

Which is better for a light or inconsistent data user?

Fizz's rollover is structurally useful when usage varies because unused monthly plan data can help absorb a heavier future month. For a consistently heavy user, compare the live high-data plans directly; Public Mobile often competes through larger fixed buckets and network breadth rather than rollover.

1. Check both coverage maps at home, work and your commute.
2. Confirm your exact phone supports the required bands, VoLTE and eSIM if you plan to use it.
3. Compare the live monthly plan—not a cached promotional screenshot.
