Can You Open a RBC Account Before Arriving in Canada?

Short answer: Yes, through the bank’s published pre-arrival pathway if you meet its conditions.

Current pre-arrival rule

RBC currently lets eligible permanent residents, foreign workers and international students open an RBC Advantage Banking account before arrival, with arrival planned within 12 months. The account must later be activated in Canada.

Timing

The published application window is for people planning to arrive within 12 months.

Age requirement

At least 13 years old, or 14 if settling in Quebec.

Country or immigration-status restriction

Applicant must be a legal resident of one of RBC’s currently eligible pre-arrival countries.

Published pre-arrival funding ceiling

The current published pathway allows funding up to $75,000 CAD, subject to the bank’s transfer and application conditions.

Expect an in-Canada activation step

Pre-arrival banking usually does not mean every account feature is immediately usable from abroad. Banks can require an in-person identity/document check or account activation after landing before unrestricted access or a debit card is available.
