When could coverage start?
If moving from outside Canada: Ontario’s current OHIP application guidance says there is no waiting period for eligible applicants; you can apply as soon as you arrive.
If moving from another province or territory: Ontario’s current public OHIP guidance says eligible applicants can apply on arrival and states that there is no waiting period.
Residency still matters
Make Ontario your primary residence and meet the provincial physical-presence rules. Eligibility also depends on citizenship or qualifying immigration status.
Immigration status alone does not guarantee coverage. The provincial or territorial plan may also require proof of address, physical presence, permit validity, employment or school enrolment.
Do not assume approval means retroactive reimbursement
If your immigration status or work situation does not yet qualify, price temporary private medical coverage rather than assuming OHIP will reimburse you later.
Keep your existing provincial, employer, school or private medical coverage until the public plan confirms both eligibility and the effective date. If the plan gives you a future start date, treat the period before that date as a real insurance gap.
