Who may qualify

Permanent resident: Permanent residents are listed as an OHIP-eligible status, subject to the residency requirements.

Work permit: A valid work permit can qualify when you are working full-time in Ontario for an Ontario employer for at least six months; qualifying spouses and dependants may also be eligible.

International student: A study permit by itself is not listed as a general OHIP eligibility route. Some students may qualify through another status or relationship, so verify directly with ServiceOntario.

Visitor: Visitors do not qualify for OHIP. Ontario recommends private medical insurance for visitors.

Residency rule

Make Ontario your primary residence and meet the provincial physical-presence rules. Eligibility also depends on citizenship or qualifying immigration status.

Avoid an uninsured gap

If your immigration status or work situation does not yet qualify, price temporary private medical coverage rather than assuming OHIP will reimburse you later.
