If your licence is from a reciprocal jurisdiction
Yukon’s current recognized list includes Canada, the United States, Taiwan, Germany with a sign-test condition, and the Isle of Man.
If your country is not reciprocal
Foreign licences outside Yukon’s recognized list do not receive the same direct exchange treatment. The Motor Vehicles office determines the testing and graduated-licensing path.
How previous driving experience is treated
A driver who has held a licence for less than two years in a jurisdiction outside Canada must enrol in Yukon’s Graduated Driver Licensing program.
Student and temporary-resident exceptions
Yukon regulations include student exceptions for people whose ordinary residence remains elsewhere while attending an educational institution. Verify that the exception fits your exact residence facts.
Why this matters before buying car insurance
Vehicle registration timing can be shorter than the driver-licence deadline, and Yukon registration requires valid Yukon insurance. Coordinate licensing, registration and insurance rather than treating them as separate deadlines.
Do not assume that simply holding a foreign licence means an insurer will automatically credit every year of overseas driving. Keep the original driver abstract, licence history, claims history and translations that can prove the record.
