Saskatchewan driver’s licence exchange for newcomers
Deadline: A new Saskatchewan resident may drive with a valid out-of-province driver’s licence for 90 days after moving to Saskatchewan.
Can you keep driving on your foreign licence?

If your licence is from a reciprocal jurisdiction
SGI publishes a list of honoured jurisdictions whose licences may be exchanged for a Saskatchewan Class 5 licence and motorcycle endorsement where applicable. The list includes the United States and numerous European and Asia-Pacific jurisdictions.
If your country is not reciprocal
A newcomer holding a licence from a country not honoured or recognized by SGI is normally required to complete driver examinations. Saskatchewan may accept some licences not shown on the public list, so SGI should confirm borderline cases.
How previous driving experience is treated
The nine-month learning period and driver-training requirement may be waived when acceptable past driving experience is proven with a valid licence and required translation or driving record.
Student and temporary-resident exceptions
Full-time students attending approved Saskatchewan institutions and their immediate families can be exempt from exchanging their licence while they are living in the province for school.
Why this matters before buying car insurance
Basic Saskatchewan vehicle insurance is tied to registration. Keep your foreign driver history because recognized experience can affect the licence path and may help when establishing your local driving record.
Do not assume that simply holding a foreign licence means an insurer will automatically credit every year of overseas driving. Keep the original driver abstract, licence history, claims history and translations that can prove the record.
Documents to prepare
Bring the valid original licence, a driving record when required, and an acceptable translation or International Driving Permit if the licence is not in English or French.
