If your licence is from a reciprocal jurisdiction
PEI publishes reciprocal and unilateral exchange lists. Eligible licences can be exchanged without a written knowledge exam or road test, although supporting documents and a vision test may still be required.
If your country is not reciprocal
A licence from another country outside PEI’s exchange lists requires a knowledge test, the Novice Driver Course for Newcomers and a road test. PEI also has a Licensed Driver Education Course route for some experienced drivers from non-reciprocal countries.
How previous driving experience is treated
Experienced drivers from non-reciprocal countries with at least two years of provable driving experience may qualify for a process that reduces normal graduated-licensing wait requirements.
Student and temporary-resident exceptions
Full-time students attending a PEI educational institution may drive on a valid home licence while studying, with an International Driving Permit where required.
Why this matters before buying car insurance
PEI requires vehicle insurance. Preserve an official driver abstract and other history documents because they can support both the licence exchange and later insurance discussions.
Do not assume that simply holding a foreign licence means an insurer will automatically credit every year of overseas driving. Keep the original driver abstract, licence history, claims history and translations that can prove the record.

Bring the valid photo licence, two PEI address documents, immigration documents, any required translation and a driver abstract or embassy/licensing letter where PEI requires it.
