If your licence is from a reciprocal jurisdiction
Ontario publishes a licence-exchange list covering every Canadian province and territory, U.S. states and a defined group of foreign jurisdictions. Eligible passenger-vehicle licences can generally be exchanged without the normal knowledge and road-test sequence, subject to licence class and driving experience.
If your country is not reciprocal
A licence from a jurisdiction without an Ontario exchange agreement does not receive a simple class-for-class exchange. The process depends on proven driving experience and can require the G1 knowledge test plus a road test before a full Class G licence is issued.
How previous driving experience is treated
Driving experience matters. Ontario can credit eligible foreign experience, and the documents proving how long you have been licensed affect whether you can move directly toward a G2 or full G road test.
Student and temporary-resident exceptions
Ontario does not provide a broad newcomer-student exemption equivalent to some provinces. If Ontario becomes your residence, use the 60-day resident rule unless the ministry confirms a specific exception applies.
Why this matters before buying car insurance
Ontario auto insurers use driving record and length of licensing as rating factors. FSRA says MTO-recognized foreign driving experience is valid for rating personal auto insurance, so getting experience properly recognized can matter beyond the licence itself.
Do not assume that simply holding a foreign licence means an insurer will automatically credit every year of overseas driving. Keep the original driver abstract, licence history, claims history and translations that can prove the record.
