How long can you drive with a foreign licence in Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia’s newer exchange page says a recent mover with a valid licence may be able to drive for up to 180 days, while other current provincial licensing pages still state that new residents must obtain a Nova Scotia licence within 90 days. Confirm your deadline directly with Access Nova Scotia.

The clock is about residency, not simply the date you first crossed the border as a tourist. If your status changes from visitor or student to resident, or you begin employment that changes how the province treats you, re-check the deadline instead of relying on the date printed on your foreign licence.

Do students or temporary residents get an exception?

The current exchange page says students attending college or university in Nova Scotia need to exchange within the applicable newcomer period; full-time students may qualify for a reduced fee and preserved expiry date with institutional proof.

Start the exchange before the last legal day

Waiting until the deadline creates unnecessary risk. Appointments, licence authentication, translations and road-test availability can all add time. Start early enough that a document problem does not leave you unable to drive.

What to collect before surrendering your licence

Bring the valid outside licence, required identity and residency documents, translations where necessary, and any history documents requested by the Registry.

Previous licensing can affect entry into the graduated licensing system and testing. Bring proof of the licence and driving history so the Registry can determine the appropriate stage.

Insurance comes after the licence path is clear

Before buying a vehicle, get the licence deadline confirmed and preserve your driving record. Private auto insurers may ask for licensing history when quoting a newcomer.

Keep copies of every history document before surrendering your old licence. A driver abstract, claims-history letter or official first-licence date can be harder to obtain once you have already left the issuing country.
