Can you keep driving on your foreign licence?

The NWT driver manual says a recent resident may use a valid outside licence for a maximum of 30 days. Separate current guidance says a foreign national living in the NWT can drive on a valid foreign licence plus an International Driving Permit for up to 12 months. Confirm which route applies to your status before driving past 30 days.

If your licence is from a reciprocal jurisdiction

A licence from another Canadian province or territory can be transferred. Some international licences may also be transferable when the issuing country is eligible.

If your country is not reciprocal

When the foreign licence is not eligible for transfer, the territorial office determines the required testing and first-time licensing path.

How previous driving experience is treated

Bring official evidence of prior licensing and ask Driver and Vehicle Services how it will be credited before surrendering the licence.

Student and temporary-resident exceptions

The NWT manual provides an exemption for students attending an NWT educational institution in some circumstances. Confirm current eligibility directly.

Why this matters before buying car insurance

If you plan to register a vehicle, coordinate the licence decision with registration and insurance requirements. Do not rely on the IDP rule as proof that an insurer will credit foreign experience.

Do not assume that simply holding a foreign licence means an insurer will automatically credit every year of overseas driving. Keep the original driver abstract, licence history, claims history and translations that can prove the record.

Documents to prepare

Bring the foreign licence, International Driving Permit if using that route, immigration/status documents, identity and territorial residency proof.
