Newfoundland and Labrador driver’s licence exchange for newcomers

Deadline: A new Newfoundland and Labrador resident must exchange an existing driver’s licence within three months of becoming a resident.

Can you keep driving on your foreign licence?

A new Newfoundland and Labrador resident must exchange an existing driver’s licence within three months of becoming a resident.

If your licence is from a reciprocal jurisdiction

Licences from Canada, the United States and the province’s published reciprocity countries can generally be exchanged for the applicable passenger-vehicle class without written, vision or road testing, subject to the detailed class rules.

If your country is not reciprocal

Drivers from countries without reciprocity must complete written, vision and road tests. A valid foreign licence can exempt the driver from the mandatory wait between certain graduated-licensing stages when the licence is surrendered.

How previous driving experience is treated

Foreign driving experience can be credited when supported by a driver abstract. Age, driving experience and current class determine placement in the Newfoundland and Labrador system.

Student and temporary-resident exceptions

The province’s exchange rules are residency-driven; do not assume a general student exemption unless Motor Registration confirms one for your situation.

Why this matters before buying car insurance

Before shopping for auto insurance, request a driver abstract from the home jurisdiction. It can support recognition of non-commercial driving experience and provide insurers with a cleaner record of your history.

Do not assume that simply holding a foreign licence means an insurer will automatically credit every year of overseas driving. Keep the original driver abstract, licence history, claims history and translations that can prove the record.

Documents to prepare

Bring the original valid licence, required identification, proof of legal presence and address, translation where required, and a driver abstract if you want experience credited.
