Does this status qualify?

People in Yukon on a study visa are not eligible for the Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan.

When could coverage start?

If moving from outside Canada: New and returning Yukon residents generally have a three-month waiting period before coverage begins.

If moving from another province or territory: New residents generally wait three months, while their former provincial or territorial plan normally covers the transition period.

Residency still matters

You must make your permanent home in Yukon, hold qualifying Canadian or immigration status and meet territorial presence rules.

Immigration status alone does not guarantee coverage. The provincial or territorial plan may also require proof of address, physical presence, permit validity, employment or school enrolment.

Do not assume approval means retroactive reimbursement

New residents and ineligible students should maintain prior, employer, school or private medical insurance until territorial coverage is active.

Keep your existing provincial, employer, school or private medical coverage until the public plan confirms both eligibility and the effective date. If the plan gives you a future start date, treat the period before that date as a real insurance gap.
