Prince Edward Island health coverage for work permit holders

Does this status qualify?

International workers may receive a temporary PEI Health Card when the work permit authorizes work in PEI for at least 183 days.

When could coverage start?

If moving from outside Canada: Canadian citizens returning from another country and permanent residents moving from outside Canada may be eligible for first-day coverage.

If moving from another province or territory: The former province normally covers the first three months; PEI coverage begins on the first day of the third month following the date you permanently reside in PEI.

Residency still matters

You must be legally in Canada and make PEI your primary residence for at least six months plus one day each year.

Immigration status alone does not guarantee coverage. The provincial or territorial plan may also require proof of address, physical presence, permit validity, employment or school enrolment.

Do not assume approval means retroactive reimbursement

If your permit does not meet the worker or student conditions, arrange private or institutional coverage before relying on PEI Medicare.

Keep your existing provincial, employer, school or private medical coverage until the public plan confirms both eligibility and the effective date. If the plan gives you a future start date, treat the period before that date as a real insurance gap.
