Canadian citizens and permanent residents moving from outside Canada usually receive coverage from the date they become Nova Scotia residents.

Moving from another province or territory

Coverage usually begins on the first day of the third month following the date you become a Nova Scotia resident.

Who may qualify

Permanent resident: Permanent residents moving from outside Canada can generally apply for first-day resident coverage.

Work permit: Work permit holders can qualify from the later of the Nova Scotia residency date or immigration-document effective date when the permit or qualifying employment is valid for at least 12 months.

International student: International students with a study permit valid at least 12 months generally become eligible on the first day of the 13th month after arrival or permit date, whichever is later. Teaching or research assistants may qualify earlier.

Visitor: Tourists, transients and visitors are not eligible residents.

Residency rule

You must be legally entitled to remain in Canada, make Nova Scotia your primary home and generally be physically present at least 183 days per calendar year.

Avoid an uninsured gap

Students facing the 12-month pre-eligibility period should maintain institutional or private medical coverage until MSI is active.
