Northwest Territories health coverage for permanent residents

Bottom line: Permanent residents who establish an NWT home may qualify, subject to registration and the assigned effective date.

Does this status qualify?

Permanent residents who establish an NWT home may qualify, subject to registration and the assigned effective date.

When could coverage start?

If moving from outside Canada: The public eligibility page does not state one universal start date for all people arriving from outside Canada. Apply promptly and confirm the effective date with Health Services Administration.

If moving from another province or territory: Coverage generally starts on the first day of the third month immediately following the month you became an NWT resident.

Residency still matters

You must be lawfully entitled to be or remain in Canada, make your home in the NWT and ordinarily be present at least 153 days per calendar year.

Immigration status alone does not guarantee coverage. The provincial or territorial plan may also require proof of address, physical presence, permit validity, employment or school enrolment.

Do not assume approval means retroactive reimbursement

Confirm the effective date before cancelling prior or private insurance, especially when arriving from outside Canada.

Keep your existing provincial, employer, school or private medical coverage until the public plan confirms both eligibility and the effective date. If the plan gives you a future start date, treat the period before that date as a real insurance gap.
